Local artists are a wonderful addition to rural communities. These painters and illustrators assist our researchers in sharing the canopy life that is usually too high up for our eyes to appreciate, among many other species of plants and animals that they love to paint. Many of these drawings and paintings are then used for our trail signs, t-shirts and posters.
Meet the community artists
Orlando: He is a 15 year old boy who attends Jr. High and lives with his parents, brother and sister in his tiny rainforest ejido called El Nopal. He is a talented artist, despite his young age, and has worked with BiodiverCity since 2016 illustrating native plants and butterflies.
Gerardo: He is 15 years old. He also attends Jr. High and lives with his parents and older brother in the ejido El Nopal. His talents have been best appreciated in his illustrations of the endangered cycad palm Zamia purpurea and other native cycad palms.
Gustavo: He is 21 years old and an all around great guy. He lives with his young wife and 3 year old daughter in the ejido El Nopal. “Tavito”, as we call him, is a talented artist of tropical flora and fauna. He also works with BiodiverCity as our main art instructor to the local kids club “Hijos de la Selva”.
Sergio: He is 25 years old and lives with his parents, brother and 4 year old niece in the ejido 24 de Febrero. He is a wonderfully creative artist whose talents go from drawing and painting to floral design and beautifully elaborate church decorations during special local events. He has participated with BiodiverCity since 2014.
Nestor: He is a 22 year old young man studying forestry science in the local technical college. When he is not at school, he lives with his mother in a tiny edjido called Escutia where he plants many species of native vegetation, hoping to one day have his own private botanical garden for all to visit and learn.
