Our projects support exploring creative activities that provide economical alternatives at the same time as enhancing the landscape and preserving native wildlife.
Beekeeping
Beekeeping is a sustainable activity that is a win win win situation! It enhances native vegetation through pollination in the rainforest, money to the beekeeper from the sales of honey and a healthy, even medicinal, product to the purchaser. In the ejido of 24 de Febrero, local participants have found beekeeping to be an enjoyable compliment to their normal ranching activities. Recently, this ejido received a grant from the Australian Embassy to purchase several bee boxes (without the bees) from the Australian company “Flow”. Now, the local beekeepers are enjoying this new technology from Flow Hives and the bees seem happier too.
Native Plant Nursery
The ejido 24 de Febrero has a native plant nursery, run wholly by women, that ensures a constant supply of native trees for ecological restoration projects. The trees are sold, giving the women a profit and the trees are planted either in pastures to enrich the ecological dynamics or in the forest to increase food sources for wild species.
Ecotourism
The Uxpanapa rainforest is a beautiful and unique area that many would love to visit. BiodiverCity, is not a tour company, however we do encourage locals and non locals to visit and meet the centuries old trees in this virgin rainforest, find the strange rock formations in the caves, climb a tree or swim in a stream. All visits are guided. If you would like to schedule a visit or ask for more information on how to get here, where to stay and what to eat and do, please write to us!

Ecological Tree Pruning
Many trees are cut down when their branches become a problem for electrical lines, rooftops, etc. But what happens when the tree is an endangered species or a valuable food source for native wildlife or a wonderfully large tree over a hundred years old. BiodiverCity trains locals to prune these magnificent trees instead of cutting them down completely, usinge technical climbing gear and pruning equipment. Ecological pruning is a sustainable activity as the pruner can charge a fee for the work and the tree is saved from being cut, giving food and shelter to other species.
Arts
In the ejidos of Nopal and 24 de Febrero, are a group of local artisans, photographers and video filmmakers that document the local history, flora and fauna and people in esthetic images and tell their stories through multimedia. When these beautiful products are sold, earnings go to the artist and love for the rainforest is shared to inspire more to protect our native species.
